Year of the Ox and the Valentine

It's a different celebration of Chinese New year for this year. I visited the Manila Chinatown for the new year, and it's not much vibrant and festive due to the health threat of a pandemic.

I remember how the district of Binondo in Manila was full of energy with the massive crowd celebrating the Chinese new year.

It was colorful. It was fun!

And so this year is my year! I was born in the year of the Wood Ox according to the Chinese animal sign, and this year happens to be the celebration of the year of the said animal sign.

Ever since my younger years, I used to be fascinated with the Chinese zodiacs and astrology that we follow even up to this day.

With the Ox sign, I believe that it exhibits some characteristics like dependability and productivity. It may always be hard in the beginning, but eventually, things will be easy.

Ox born individual may have higher expectations and has good leadership potential. The vigorous and hardworking built of the Ox will make all obstacles and challenges be overcomes.

The most meaningful message for this year is to stay calm and patient, that eventually, the wheel of fortune will turn in one's favor. That's what I need to work on myself. I've been patiently waiting after a deep slumber, and may this year be a new beginning.

A new hope, career, passion, and energy!

And so, just two days after the Chinese new year is the celebration of Valentine's day. It's about evoking emotions of love and care -- of remembering and reminiscing.

February is the month of love, and so we have chosen this month for our lifelong undertaking. This time may be the most beautiful moment of meaningful and soulful expression of love.

And so, today is the heart's day. It's the time when we send special wishes to our loved ones. Despite the distance, love would always be there, not just for today but in every moment of our lives.

The new year is about a new beginning. We express our love, and we nourish it. And so, just like a flower, it will bloom and become beautiful. It gives smiles and making one cheerful.

New Year 2021: A New Hope

The year 2020 brought a lot of pain and suffering into our lives. It seems like the darkest era of our times. Something unexpected, but we've learned to accept and embrace.

If this is the preview of a new decade '20s, we could predict the future; that uncertainty is now part of our daily living.

Things change instantaneously. It's like a blink of an eye, and our fate would change.

The year 2020 perhaps was the saddest and unpredictable moment we've experienced. It ruined our hopes and dreams and redirected our compass to a crossroads. That was the end of the year 2020. Finally, we've all welcomed the new year 2021 with our greatest hopes ever. That after the long agony, we can blur the sad memories from the deepest of our consciousness.

That was the end of the year 2020. Finally, we've all welcomed the new year 2021 with our greatest hopes ever. That after the long agony, we can blur the sad memories from the deepest of our consciousness.

A new world

Whatever earth changes we've been experiencing, one thing I'm sure of is that this is part of the Divine plan. We're not in control; hence we let things happen and make things happen in our human capacity.

If the world has to change this way, then there's a greater force that can move us and direct our path -- either to follow and have faith or to step back and have doubts.

So, in this new world order, some would-be victims of a sad reality, while others would be victorious survivors.

New opportunities

We've seen people who have lost a living; have missed some chances and opportunities for the past year.

Some may have struggled a lot in business, career, and life. It also caused our fears, frustrations, and anger. It made us express all kinds of emotions. It had caused inconvenience and a downgrade on the quality of living at some point.

This year 2021, is about new opportunities that await us. The missed one is just a moment of pause; to stop for a while; to re-calibrate, and be ready to stand up again.

This year 2021, is about an opportunity to be together as a family once again. To be reunited and to recall how we've started it all.

When we're somewhat lost, our family would always be there to guide and light our path. They're there on our knocked down and cheer us on our way up.

Opportunities don't only knock once. We see opportunities everywhere. And if there seems none, we create it ourselves, and we even create opportunities for others.

A new dream

Yes, we've awakened on a deep slumber. It was somehow a nightmare!

This year, we're hoping for a better night's sleep. We're hoping for a better dream. And so, as we wake up, we'll turn that dream into a reality.

And when we dream, we extend it to the special people in our lives. They are the source of our inspirations, our happiness, and a reason for living. Family is love, and family is forever. That's one thing I know for sure.

A night dream or a daydream, it's both a pleasant experience of hoping for brighter days ahead.

A new hope

We're hopeful that no matter how life seems uncertain, we still believe that something good will happen.

Our hope will always keep us alive, to make us believe that miracles do happen every day. From the time we wake up until the time we go to sleep.

A new hope is there to give us the energy required to live actively. A new hope gives us many chances of trying again and never giving up but hoping when things seem to be falling.

This year 2021, is about hope in all aspects of living. We hope for the best things to happen. We hope for the best wishes to come, and we hope for the best life ahead.

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2020: Love, Peace and Harmony

Tikoy (Niรกn gฤo) and Ang Pao (Hรณngbฤo) is a popular Chinese symbols of good luck and prosperity. In the Philippines and among the Chinese-Filipino community, these two are a must-have during special holidays like the Lunar Chinese New Year and other special occasions.

Ang Pao or the red envelope evolved into an all-season object for gift-giving. It is not just given during the Chinese New Year, but also during occasions like birthdays and weddings. In the Philippines, we have adopted the giving of Ang Pao during the Christmas season and other occasions.

I always like special delicacies and so I also like eating Tikoy which signifies harmony and closeness among the family. It is also the stickiness that symbolizes bonding and togetherness.

In Binondo, the past couple of years was an auspicious celebration as I have experienced the vibrant and enchanting Chinese New Year celebration. The streets of Binondo offer the best in Chinese culture and tradition that is passed on from generation to generation.

I remember the kilometer-long street of Ongpin in Binondo when the fun-filled activities happen during the Chinese New Year. The lion and the dragon dance are always colorful and graceful giving positive energy to the watchers. The firecrackers ward off evil spirits and all forms of negativity as they would believe. It's fun and the good vibe would bring in a positive mindset and emotion, and that's the essence.

The Chinese influence my beliefs about prosperity and so I follow the feng shui and the Chinese zodiac in some ways. They just guide for a positive living.

The past years are live-action experiences and the stories will not be forgotten.

Those were the years of celebrating abundance and prosperity. And so for this year and in succeeding years, I may not be able to celebrate it Binondo, but I will still be open to embracing the culture and tradition that gives meaning to life from different perspectives.

But above all for this year, it's not just about prosperity, it's about love, peace, and harmony that must reign in our hearts. That's what we all need at this very moment.

New Year 2020: A New Decade

It's now the 20s! The new decade has started. A new beginning... New hope and new aspirations.

The decade 2010s  has ended and the new decade 2020s has started and seem to be brighter. We have welcomed the new year and the new decade with a greater vision. And so our mission will come a long way to reach other milestones and breakthroughs over the next decade.

The previous year 2019 was a great moment in our family as we have welcomed blessings that will leave a lasting impact a living legacy.

For this year 2020, the new decade has shown a glimpse of a shining and a promising future; a vision of a distant future.

We have celebrated the new year with a simple yet meaningful family gathering at the farm. This was the first-ever new year that we have spent outdoor and in nature. It was fun and a great way of welcoming a new year with a lighter vibe, but with greater hopes and dreams.

What the future is like

As we enjoy the serenity, we are already looking forward to the kind of life that our grandparents have envisioned for his family and offspring.

My grandfather is a great visionary and he sees opportunities for sustainable living. He is there to tell a story, a great story of his humble beginnings how he started it all.

For us his grandchildren, that was not only a story; that was an inspiration to realize our potentials and live a better life. He inspires and instills values and virtues through his example.

Teaching the minds of young ones

When I was at the farm, I am eager to listen to the words of wisdom of my Father. This may be the reason I have learned to embrace a farm living the way they do.

For the new year, again my father inspired us all including his grandchildren about the value of nature through a simple tree planting activity. The kids were eager to plant a dwarf coconut tree through the guidance of my father. To touch the soil isn't to get a dirty hand, but to reap what they have sowed in years to come.

That tree planting activity was momentous since they have planted on the new year and a new decade 2020. They will see how it will grow and bear fruits in years to come when they visit the farm.

A promising future awaits

In the next 2 decades; about 20 years from now, our hometown will be more livable and it will offer a greater and sustainable opportunity.

We were born and raised in this place we call home and we will always come back to see its development and create the future we envisioned.

What a great start to the year. We took a deep breath and breathe it out. We feel lighter and calmer. We are more inspired and we would want a life that is on a positive side.

A new year and new decade 2020! A new journey to take. A new road ahead. A new crossroad to overcome. A new soulful moment to live.

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2019: Luck, Prosperity and Faith

Lion and Dragon Dance
Chinese new year has been part of the Philippine culture for centuries and is celebrated by Filipinos from all walks of life most especially of Chinese descent we call Tsinoy or Intsik.

In Binondo, a district in Manila, a vibrant and colorful celebration happens every Chinese New year to welcome prosperity and abundance in businesses established by the Tsinoys with a majority of the community coming from Fujian and Guangdong province in China.

Grand Parade at Ongpin St. in Binondo
Centuries have passed, they have endured the challenges of wars and conflicts in their little community we call Chinatown in Binondo as well as communities established in other places in the Philippine archipelago. But today their businesses thrive in Binondo and they have conquered almost all commerce and industries becoming business leaders.

Our Philippine culture is greatly influenced by the Tsinoys as evidenced by the food that we serve during holidays, beliefs on luck through Chinese astrology or horoscope, Chinese martial arts, Chinese feng shui, Chinese arts, and architectural designs and structures. Today, all of these influences are alive in Binondo particularly in the famous street of Ongpin - - the center of the Chinese New year celebration in the country.

Fruits and lucky charms
Even in politics and governance, Tsinoys have been elected to serve the country. Beyond their business interests, they have proven to be an effective public servant becoming truly Filipino by heart. From their ancestors as Chinese immigrants to the Philippines, they now have a massive influence in Philippine politics and Filipinos patronize their brand of leadership.

My journey in Binondo started back in 2013. Celebrating the Chinese New Year 2013: A New Beginning was a meaningful and joyful experience. That was the beginning of a Chinese-Filipino culture immersion for a greater understanding of the deeply-rooted Chinese culture and influence in the country.

Five years after, Celebrating Chinese New Year 2018: Prosperity and Abundance was a celebration of success and thanksgiving for a greater year that has passed and a greater optimism for the current year. That's the essence; becoming better and bolder every year.

This year of the Pig according to Chinese culture brings wealth and prosperity through beliefs and symbols that one must possess. This has been adopted by most Filipinos and every year we strive to become a better version of ourselves and free ourselves from obsolete beliefs. Every new year is a renewal and a vow through the lists of resolutions. We may believe in luck, but it is also our faith and personal devotion to a higher source that brings success and prosperity in life.

May our dreams and hopes become higher and brighter as we celebrate a new year with optimism and grace, this year and beyond.

New Year 2019: Sunshine After The Rain

A glittering, sparkling, and noisy celebration. That was the end of 2018! Fireworks had light up the dark street as we have welcomed the New Year 2019.

Just a few minutes before the clock turned exactly 12 A.M. signifying that the New Year has officially started, I shouted out loud with my vocal power to sing the famous "Auld Lang Syne" and belted songs of Michael Bolton, the "Go the Distance" and the rock star Bon Jovi's, "It's My Life" both songs randomly chosen out of the thousands on the list.

Good thing that the weather was good after the rain had stopped for people and families to welcome the New Year with positive hopes and somehow to have light up some fireworks too. Nothing could have stopped the Filipinos to walk in the rain to have last-minute shopping to buy food for 'media noche' including the 12 or 13 different kinds of fruit that would bring good luck, wealth, and prosperity according to the traditional Chinese feng shui.

Nothing could have stopped us to endure the long line to buy a chocolate cake with a signature "New Year 2019" on top. After all, it's nothing compared to the challenges we have endured for the year 2018.

In the last 10 years, the new year's eve celebration was more colorful and noisy, but now the noise and glitters are shorter. Celebrations are becoming more simple, but still memorable ones. Perhaps we strive hard to make each new year celebration have something special on the table and be together with our dear family.

Some may have chosen to spend their time in a lavish 'year-end party with friends and acquaintances and enjoy the New year countdown with them. I may even have the desire, but I always choose to spend the New Year with my family. Even how simple the celebration is, it gives a certain meaning that family is love; truly our love. A family who will be with us not only on the first day of the year but throughout the year and beyond.

Since 2012, I spend precious time to be alone for some 'Year-end reflection or Year in Reviews. I made a promise to myself to reflect on how the previous year made me better, what have I accomplished and what are the lessons learned. Christmas in Our Hearts 2018: A New Milestone, Self-Renewal, and New Beginning was a roller-coaster ride. That year brought massive struck-like lighting and a great wave-like tsunami. The year 2018 may not be favorable, but I have fulfilled some goals and learned valuable life lessons. Just like when the year has ended, a new and brighter year ahead awaits. Though we may never know what is ahead of us, yet we remain hopeful.

As I look back on the previous year, New Year 2018: Beyond the Limits brought a rough journey with an uncertain destination. Several distractions didn't serve a true purpose. Being out of focus can be destructive and put limits on our actions and coveted goals.

Going back to the present, this New Year reflection is about my goals and aspirations to achieve for the year and a carry over the previous years' experiences and life lessons. No matter how unfavorable it may be, still it is part of my past and can be part of my present and future endeavors.

Higher level of endurance

My previous corporate jobs and positions required tremendous physical power. I have learned to improve my physical and mental stamina through the years since I learned to adopt powerful physical exercises and meditation which I have not practiced actively for about 3 years already. May this year 2019 bring back to a lighter and more active physical energy through simple yet powerful exercises and meditation.

Physical Grounding

I've started to realize a few years ago that nature has given us a way to stay grounded or connected with our roots. With our busy lifestyle and stressful day-to-day routine, we forget to be grounded. Our mind takes us somewhere else and we do not feel the natural elements of the earth for healing. Back in my hometown about 3 years ago, I put some medium-sized fine stones to add natural elements to our little garden. I would then invite my mother to take a barefoot walk along with me. I believe it gives a physical grounding effect aside from the natural reflexology it gives.

May this year bring me to places close to nature and experience real physical grounding. To leave footprints in the sand, camping by the beach, and sitting on the shore.

Emotional health

To feel angry is normal, but to utter words that are not good might be hard to take back. Thus, one thing that I have learned is to be in control of emotions. It may be the hardest thing for me to do, but that is good for emotional health. There are times when I have to keep quiet to avoid an argument despite the urge to do so. Now, I would try my best to understand people's actions and intentions and apply self-restraint in the choice of words and appropriate actions.

Mindfulness and Social awareness

Being mindful is good for mental health. Through prayers and meditation, it will help to look beyond ourselves. To lookout for an opportunity to be of service to someone or to a larger community. I have been part of a group that gives greater service to humanity through social projects, however, I have not followed through for years. May this year open another door to reach out to people for empowerment.

The Power of Now

One thing that I have learned is to act on the moment whenever possible. To procrastinate is to delay things and soon when there's a lack of inspiration it's hard to do it. To be present at the moment is also being mindful and could prevent us from doubts, fears, and frustrations.

When I acted on my dream to start a business on my own, I didn't wait to have everything to be perfect or accumulate more knowledge. I simply made the first move and everything follows according to plans.

Grit and Perseverance

When all else fail, I would have to choose to accept things as it happens, analyze the situation, make a solution and move on to what's next. Whatever happens, no matter how difficult the road is, I have to survive the odds and keep the fire in me to reach my dreams. With relentless desire, the highest hopes, and a positive spirit, I will be able to make things possible for myself. If I dream of it, then I can achieve it.

The list for new year's resolutions may be endless, but for now, these are the topmost priorities that are achievable. Now, as I remember, those 2 songs I have sung may subconsciously be what I am. I always aspire to "Go the Distance" to reach the extra mile. I also take control of my life for a reason that "It's My Life" is my life and I have to live it. And remember those people who made a sacrifice to walk in the rain? they may have been over and gone through the pain.

A blissful New Year 2019!

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2018: Prosperity and Abundance

Chinese culture and tradition were preserved by the Chinese-Filipino living in the Philippines for several generations and they have continued to influence Filipinos in many ways.

Our lifestyle which includes food, clothing, belief system, and even modern technology is embraced and valued. We are always delighted by the colorful sights and architectural designs and entertained with classical musical instruments. These are some of the influences we've adapted for centuries and will continue to exist in generations.

Chinese tradition is worthy of preservation since they show us how to love our culture; show respect to older people and share blessings with others.

It was in 2013 when I first experience the Chinese new year in Binondo. The street was not as crowded as the celebration in 2018, yet people enjoy the scenes and the Chinese cultural presentation. Celebrating the Chinese New Year 2013: A New Beginning is something worth reminiscing since it awakened my curiosity and fascination with Chinese history and culture and their massive influence on Filipino culture. Today, Binondo is not only a great cultural hub but an important economic center in Manila.

The district is vibrant and creates nostalgia as the world's oldest Chinatown. Centuries of cultural and economic ties have formed great friendships and closer relationships. There's a certain bond that unites us and by embracing each other's culture and beliefs, we're leaving a legacy to the future generations of the lasting friendships we have formed through the years.

The video above; click the arrow to view

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2017: An Auspicious Celebration was about optimism and higher hopes of what's about to happen or a prediction of fate. Truly a magnificent celebration becomes surreal and it does a wonderful thing about the present and future living. With the Chinese zodiac, the prediction has become magical and brought a wondrous surprise. Being hopeful to the highest degree attracts opportunities and that was a turned reality in 2017. Something wonderful happened and another chapter has opened which is bigger and brighter.

The year 2018 was also welcomed; full of hopes and aspirations for more abundance and a prosperous living. A comfortable life that we have been dreaming of and a simple life that is dedicated to service. No matter what influences we have embraced, still, we are Filipino in words, deeds, and thoughts.

We will continue to be more optimistic about what is unknown and does not live in fear, but the courage to face the challenges with perseverance and a positive attitude. Like the Tsinoy or the Chinese-Filipino, they have succeeded in life because of their mindset of abundance; of having enough, and always asking for more so that they too can share what they have.

Prosperity is about receiving and acknowledging the blessings that are coming into our lives and taking a part of it to give back and become a blessing to others who are in need.

May the year 2018 give a meaningful life; a prosperous and abundant life and dreams coming true in the years to come.

New Year 2018: Beyond The Limits

That was the tough year 2017. A roller coaster of unforeseen events and unexpected triumphs; an opportunity that was never lost but continuously on a cycle. When I looked back to the previous year, I am still overwhelmed by the circumstances experienced and feeling grateful for what I have achieved in anyways. What I have learned through the years is that when the door closes, certainly a window will be opened for another milestone and breakthroughs.

The year 2017 ended with a positive spirit and gratitude to the Divine while looking forward to a great life it has to offer for the year 2018 for myself, my family, friends, and everyone who has made a significant impact in my life.

To celebrate New Year means a celebration of a new life full of hopes and optimism for a brighter future. I always look forward to the brighter side and taking away the negativity that may become a hindrance towards future success. Looking forward doesn't necessarily mean the inability of looking back from past living; where struggles, obstacles, and defeat are always inevitable.

It's always good to look back for self-realization leading to stronger determination. Whatever we have gone through will not change but we can always learn a lesson for a positive change and renewal. To celebrate a New Year is just the start of another challenge to take and hindrances to break. New Year 2016: A New Beginning was a liberation of the mind and grounding back to reality. Attainment of higher consciousness will always be instilled in the mind and will be the guide for a greater living beyond the physical plane.

A thousand miles journey will be needing a guide; a GPS that will lead towards a destination. It's the will that can complete the journey no matter how far it may seem. Time will be the barometer of success; either we arrive on time, behind the time, or ahead of time. New Year 2017: A Hopeful Journey was about having the faith and perseverance that things will be better ahead of time; that another life is waiting and it will be something bigger and still significant. Truly that was a greater opportunity given and will continue to persevere no matter what challenges I may face.

Time has come that I don't have to be on the same level of fight, but to understand and find meaning in every challenge encountered. I ended the year 2017 with a bigger fight of optimism that things would become better and healing would eventually take place for the benefit of the greater whole.

A New Year celebration with the family is always a source of joy; to be reunited and gain positive insights about living. When things go wrong it needs to be fixed from a different perspective. We may have been defeated and put to test, but we can always reconnect the dots and rewire the broken lines to become full and complete again. The principle of higher consciousness is beyond our lower emotions; beyond our limits. We can always stand up again and face the world with greater heights and a clearer view of the path.

The road ahead is always about advanced thinking and the ability to see the next episode of life. The year 2018 is welcomed with greater energy. The light from above will serve as a reminder that things certainly become brighter even in the dark. We can rise up from the challenge and will emerge as a champion —  a winner in life.

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2017: An Auspicious Celebration

For centuries, Chinese immigrants from mainland China have established closer ties with the Filipinos. Since then, we have mutually embraced religious traditions and appreciated the rich culture and heritage that remains to be strong and lasting. Chinese merchants in the Philippines existed during the early years of civilization and became a great trading partner contributing to the robust economy and fortifying stronger relationships.

Chinese people who have chosen to live and work in the Philippines were accepted by most Filipinos and they have brought massive influence to our culture and way of living.

Embracing the Chinese culture made a significant impact on our lives. Their beliefs, wisdom, and character are worth emulating. Chinese people have taught us how to live based on their life principles from the teachings of their religions. Buddhism which was brought to China became a foundation of wisdom, humility, and compassion. These traits which are the embodiment of Buddhist philosophy are the same guiding principles on how to live a meaningful and fulfilling life; a better life worth living.

Looking back, celebrating the Chinese new year 2013 was a memorable experience in Binondo, Manila. Known as the oldest Chinatown in the world, it has shown great transformation and preservation of Chinese-Filipino culture. The old and preserved houses and commercial buildings are a symbol of love and respect for its culture and heritage. For years, Manila Chinatown has given positive energy and vibrance to visitors and traders and they hold on to their beliefs that are passed on from generation to generation.

The graceful Dragon and Lion Dance

Good luck and prosperity are attributed to the colorful dance presentation where dancers have to mimic the movement of a lion and a dragon; a mythical creature. Both symbolize strength, wisdom, and power in Chinese ideology. These dances are more popular during the Chinese new year, but it is also presented in various Chinese cultural, religious and political events. It is also a belief that these creatures ward off evil spirit and brings luck and fortune in business and life. Dancing graciously in a form of Chinese martial arts is a skill and has entertained visitors for its graciousness.

The lighting of firecrackers and fireworks

Lion dance with firecrackers lighting up on the street makes a joyous and wonderful celebration. During new year's eve, the street lights up with colorful fireworks and fireworks creating noise that is believed to drive away bad luck and attracts prosperity. The noise which irritates some is the same noise that brings wealth to the believers in the new year. This kind of activity which was originally enjoyed by the Chinese was also adopted by Filipinos and the world — such great influence they had.

Ang Pao as a symbol of wealth and abundance

On the busy street is a parade of generous people giving away 'ang pao' to the visitors. These small red envelopes with money on them gives luck to the receiver. Financial abundance is significant to the Chinese and a year filled with financial prosperity is a blessing from God. Being poor is a mental disease and an abundance mindset is a key to success  a belief that brings prosperity in our lives.

Chinese people hold a lot of beliefs for personal, career, business, and life in general. Some beliefs include a collection of round-shaped fruits for never-ending prosperity. Tikoy which is a gelatinous delicacy is very popular and symbolizes sweetness and a closer relationship with the family. Restaurants offering authentic Chinese foods including noodles, dumplings, and other delicacies are a must for good luck. What else is on the list? feng shui for prosperity and Chinese martial arts are some of the many influences brought by years of Filipino-Chinese partnership.

The year of the fire rooster in Chinese astrology will bring positivity to everyone. A hopeful year starts with having a positive mindset and clearing off negative past experiences that prevent us from moving forward.

Faith is essential for success and all the symbolism can bring prosperity if accompanied by hard work and perseverance.

The Filipino and Chinese friendship will remain to be strong in years to come as we build trusting relationships with camaraderie and warm acceptance regardless of one's cultural upbringing and philosophical beliefs.

New Year 2017: A Hopeful Journey

"Starting the year right would mean doing what I believe would truly work based on previous experiences. Doing the right thing with the right mindset, and set of virtues and spiritual beliefs are essential to living."

The year 2016 has ended with endearing challenges. Some setbacks created emotional struggle and solitude. Though it was not totally a pleasant year, still I remained to be optimistic and in control of my own reality and destiny. A few years ago, in 2009, I started believing in the power of the 'Law of Attraction,' which attracts magical experience and magnificent results in my life. I've manifested some thought forms and it's a very powerful tool to use when being hopeful of your fate and destiny. Since then, a manifestation of dreams and desires have been easy. I couldn't imagine at first how I have achieved such tremendous energy that has changed my life. I am a living reality of 'you are what you think and I have made things possible -- through the power of the Law of attraction.

This 2017, nothing has changed with my beliefs on the power of this universe. Law of attraction will still be my guide about wonderful living; just like spiritual or religious beliefs that I have for years. Not all of our desires were made possible, however with deeper faith and perseverance, it will be achieved in due time and in God's perfect time.

The law of universal timing is what I have learned a few years back and it has brought a powerful effect on our lives. It served as our guide in business, career, and life.

Starting the year right would mean doing what I believe would truly work based on previous experiences. Doing the right thing with the right mindset, and set of virtues and spiritual beliefs are essential to living. The goals that I would set for this year are the thoughts that I may have for years that have not manifested yet, but still trusting that the universe will conspire to make it a reality. I believe that we are destined to achieve everlasting happiness and bliss and capable of becoming a blessing to others in some ways within or beyond our capacity.

Mysterious energy would surround and guide our being to renew and relive a meaningful existence. We are bestowed with great powers to manifest our dreams and goals, and this year will be a journey towards challenging tasks ahead and a rewarding fate and destinations our heart desires.

This year 2017 is about being hopeful of the unimaginable things. I still believe in magic. That's an awesome experience worth achieving. I trust that I will be guided internally by my will and instincts of what is right and wrong and lead a better life that is away from distractions, false beliefs, and bad luck. To myself, my family, relatives, and everyone close to my heart are what I desire to be shielded by a defense of stronger energy.

A balanced living, free from harm and full of optimism would dispel the negative energy of manifestation. Balanced health at all levels and an affluent disposition if God would allow is an ultimate dream.  The list would be longer and to acquire it all requires great energy. I believe that a great year is not about the winning moments, but the power to stand every time we fall. The battle continues and a wonderful journey lies not only on a strong will but a grateful heart and a powerful spirit.

New Year 2016: A New Beginning

What the wonderful year 2015. This might be the simplest statement of what I've been through for the previous year. There were ups and downs, but still able to conquer challenges and reach another milestone in life. The year 2015 brought me to another chapter of extraordinary living where I stretch myself beyond the limits.

It was a fascinating journey when I've been to places where my thoughts have brought me. It was indeed a law of attraction that's working whenever I need it. Years ago when I started to believe that we become what we think, then I learned to practice and incorporate it regularly to achieve whatever goals that I desire.

If I have done it before, then I believe that I could attract things that will surely work for me. This year I have accomplished several goals while others are in the process and turning them into a reality. Life has never become as magical as it may seem, but with creativity and passion, there has been an unimaginable turning point.

Some tough decisions would have changed circumstances, yet it was something fulfilling. For a long time in service, now is the time for a new adventure with awesome people full of energy and confidence in reaching a certain level of success.

The previous chapter has never been easy, hence full of challenges that made me a better person. I've been polished like a gem -- a precious one that illuminates and sparkles. It is a product of enlightenment to a certain level and my deepest gratitude to the master of life that once I've known.

Everything that was learned will always be carried over to the next chapter and then it goes on. Everything has its own significance and it will be of merit when it's done with honor and dignity. Being grateful to past success will help create more abundance and blessings and this is what I know for sure.

However, it's not always about the peak of happiness and success. There may have been untoward circumstances that are beyond our control and that teaches us a lesson to be resilient and by learning to move forward. Life may throw a hard rock but it can become a polished and more refined stone thereafter depending on how we deal with things and accepting the challenges.

It's truly wonderful to face obstacles towards success. It takes passion, courage, and desire to be able to make it. Along the way are rough roads and intersections that will eventually lead to the right direction. It may seem a very challenging year take, but with perseverance, I surpass the trials that will launch a newer version; a better and extraordinary one.

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2013: A New Beginning

The celebration of the Chinese new year is based on the belief of the lunar calendar month--also marks the beginning of the spring season. It is widely observed by the Chinese in many countries of the world where they have formed a community known as the 'Chinatown'.

Chinese new year brings hope, good luck, and prosperity among people. It is the beginning of another year full of positive aspirations to achieve for self, family, and community as a whole. The colorful festivities in dominant red are known to bring abundance and to spare negativity in any form. On this special day, people wear a red color shirt and make home decorations in red that symbolizes prosperity. Since the majority of the Chinese are engaged in a business, they always put something red in their buildings to attract wealth for the new year and beyond.

In Binondo, one of the busiest and populated districts of Manila is the place for the Filipino-Chinese community or popularly called 'Tsinoy'. Although they are found in various places of the Philippines, the major population and highest concentration of their population is located in the Chinatown of Binondo, Manila.

Lion dance along Ongpin St. Binondo, Manila

I was lucky to have witnessed and celebrated the event with the 'Tsinoys' in Binondo. My trip started with a little prayer in the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz or known as the 'Binondo Church'. This is where the 'Tsinoys' of the Christian faith usually go to pray and strengthen their spiritual life.

Few steps from the church are where the journey commences, in the old street of Ongpin. There is a variety of Chinese merchandise offering products and services in this busy street. Gold shops of high quality can be found in this narrow yet vibrant place. Restaurants are catering to authentic Chinese cuisine and one of which is the 'President's Grand Palace' and the 'President's tea house' to relax your senses.

Shops are catering to Chinese delicacies like the famous 'Eng Bee Tin' that produces tikoy and hopia in different variants and flavors. I've seen people falling in a long line just to satisfy their cravings for this food that is said to bring good luck. The 'tikoy' is made of glutinous rice flour which is sticky, thus symbolizes a family and relationship that is well bonded according to Chinese norms.

Red lanterns in Chinatown mall to welcome the new year

The most common business in Ongpin is the lucky charms and decors. There is so much jewelry for different purposes depending on form and color. One has to wear a particular bracelet or necklace to attract prosperity and to drive away bad luck. For home decoration, there are red lanterns in various sizes and forms to symbolize wealth and good luck.

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts is to witness the lion dance. This mythical Chinese creature dances gracefully as it is maneuvered by several dancers. They perform lion dances from one shop to another for an opportunity to receive angpao or the red envelope with money. They have never failed to entertain the business owners in a presentation that is well-rehearsed and choreographed.

There is also a dragon dance, but it is quite long and carried by several dancers. Like the lion dance, it is also a powerful mythical creature in Chinese culture. It is to spare negativity in business, the house, and the environment. Both dance presentations are seen throughout the new year's celebration in Binondo, particularly in Ongpin. It is colorful, entertaining, and attracts a crowd.

In a traditional Chinese family, 'angpao' is given to the unmarried and usually children. The little kids fall in line and patiently wait for their turn to receive 'angpao' from the elderly or their grandparents. They are expected to greet the happy new year in the Chinese language as they receive it, but they are not supposed to open the red envelop until they ran away from the giver.

In The Chinese new year, there are several ways of greetings; in a language known to them. Whether you hear the greetings 'Kung Hei Fat Choi', 'Gong Xi Fa Chai', or 'Kiong He Huat Tsai', it is an all valid form of new year greetings. It does not literally mean 'Happy new year' but it means congratulating and wishing someone for prosperity.

Giant red lanterns are legendary Chinese handicraft that symbolizes good luck

In the Philippines, the common greetings are 'Kung Hei Fat Choi' and it has been made standard greetings in media and other printed publications. It is a Cantonese greeting, usually spoken in Hong Kong and Macau, but the 'Tsinoys' speaks 'Hokkien' and prefers the greetings 'Kiong Hee Huat Tsai'. However, no matter what language or dialect is spoken for greetings, there is a spirit of understanding and it sends a single message of 'Happy New Year!'.

The Chinatown, mall is where I have witnessed cultural presentations from different groups. They have presented charming Chinese folk dances, the melodic choral, and the exhibitions of Chinese martial arts like 'Wushu' and Tai Chi'. There is also some modern Chinese hip hop that captures the attention of the younger generations. It is a day-long event until the countdown for the new year is observed and fireworks are witnessed to lighten up the evening.

The Chinese people love to preserve their heritage and they have a greater influence on culture, food, social norms, and beliefs. In the Philippines, people are familiar with the 'Feng Shui" and this is attributed to good luck, happiness, and prosperity in businesses and houses. There is also the 'horoscope' where people consult their luck or destiny on a particular day, month or year depending on the zodiac sign and animal sign you were born. Also, Filipinos are fond of eating noodles and soups brought by the Chinese since a long time ago.

Although the world constantly evolves and the culture of peace and freedom is changing, there are so many things we should learn from the Chinese. Perseverance and endurance at work accompanied by humility and gratitude are what made them achieve success in the family, career, and life in general.

The Chinese culture has its own uniqueness and their customs being extraordinary makes us multi-cultured people. Our beliefs should not be restricted to what has been instilled since birth. Open-mindedness and acceptance in faith and cultural differences bring a peaceful and vibrant living. We learn from each other and the wisdom gained is what truly brings good luck and prosperity in our lives no matter who and what we are; and no matter who we will become.

New Year 2013: Blissful Journey, Greatest Love and Thanksgiving

"May this year be more fun and a joyful journey. There will be some places to explore; wonderful people to meet, and exciting adventures to experience. Life is truly worth living and there's always a way to celebrate."

The year 2012 has brought so many good memories that I will forever cherish. Those memories serve as my learning experience that will be beneficial to my personal growth and well-being. Though there were moments of despair, still life must go on and be able to rise up and take control.

The previous year has been full of challenges and I am grateful that I've conquered those things. It may be hard to think but the end result seems wonderful and rewarding. Life in 2012 was not that easy as I have to encounter numerous obstacles along the journey. I have made it, conquered my fear, and survived the challenges.

Looking back at my 2012 new year celebration, I've written, "My Goals and Wishes for 2012" (click to read). After the weekly reflection, I have come up with a list of the things that I wish for 2012. I've written it in a peaceful and serene environment in Gurgaon, Haryana in India. The place is perfect for meditation as it is quiet and was able to concentrate in a deep meditative state.

I'm grateful for the accomplishment of my 'goals and wishes' for 2012. I wanted to be more clear and specific about my goals beyond my personal desires. Some were attainable; some have been granted and some are still in the process.

For this year 2013, my goals and wishes are just the same as the previous year, but I just want to be more specific.  I have come up with the list below:

Family - to be free from harm, conflict, and illness.

Health - to be more physically fit and active.

Career - to be more responsible and produce results.

Lifestyle - to be more balanced in way of living both personal and social.

Personal Development - to acquire virtues and values for growth and transformation.

May this year be more fun and a joyful journey. There will be some places to explore; wonderful people to meet, and exciting adventures to experience. Life is truly worth living and there's always a way to celebrate.

Success is not a destination but it is in the process of achieving the goal. More important is the ultimate fulfillment of desires--it is forever in my heart and mind.

A blessed year 2013!
